The New Era Week One: WWE Raw Vs WWE Smack Down

It’s Monday and tonight we have the second Raw show since the WWE Draft and the second Smack Down tomorrow. WWE are creating competition for themselves with two brands, one headed by Stephanie and Mick Foley and the other headed by Shane and Daniel Bryan. We will be calling it “WWE Raw Vs WWE Smack Down” and analyze both shows in comparison. We Hope you will like it.

Let’s take a look back at week one and see how the shows compared against each other and whether they were successful or not.

WWE Raw

Last Monday was Finn Balor’s birthday and he arrived on Raw, making a huge impact and earning a chance to take on Seth Rollins at SummerSlam for the new Universal Championship. That’s right, Raw will have their own new Championship since Dean Ambrose has taken the WWE Championship with him to Smack Down.

Stephanie and Mick Foley announced at the start of the show that there would be two Fatal 4 Way Matches, with the two winners facing each other at the end of the show….

The new Raw broadcast team was Michael Cole, Corey Graves and Byron Saxton.
It’s good to hear Corey on Raw.  Not sure about Michael Cole and Byron rarely offers anything of any worth.

Mick Foley also announced that Charlotte would defend her Womens Championship against Sasha Banks who had made her tap out at WWE Battleground duing a tag team match.

Finn Balor pinned Rusev in the opening match to advance to the main event of Raw….

Balor had already taken a Frog Splash, a Pop-Up Powerbomb and this from Owens:

Nia Jax beat an enhancement talent – I’m not very impressed with Nia Jax, she’s just this big overweight samoan, not particularly good in the ring in my opinion.

Roman Reigns pinned Chris Jericho to advance from the second Fatal 4 Way match and now the main event will be Roman Reigns Vs Finn Balor.

It’ll be @WWERomanReigns vs. @WWEBalor in our Main Event on #RAW, after Roman won his #Fatal4Way qualifier! https://t.co/9YVo620bGa

Both of the Final 4 Way matches were pretty entertaining.

New Day were involved in some really bad kind of in-ring comedy segment which was interrupted by The Club. I hit fast forward through a lot of this segment because it was so bad.

Neville returned to the ring after being out for a while with an injury he suffered in a match with Chris Jericho and it was good to see him back in the ring – although it was only a short match against Cutis Axel.

Welcome back @WWENeville! He picks up a victory over @RealCurtisAxel in his return to #RAW action! https://t.co/sjkXsEsJTZ

Sasha Banks defeated Charlotte to become the new WWE Womens Champion in what I thought was a really good match.

Braun Strowman, by far the worst worker of the Wyatt Family was in an enhancement match which didn’t last long. He’s not very good in the ring but he’s a big guy.

Who would ever want to step in the ring against this monster? #RAW @BraunStrowman pic.twitter.com/wQFC3SNKt7

Enzo and Big Cass had a match with Epico and Primo but I pressed Fast Forward during the annoying pre-match promo by Enzo and I didn’t hit play until the main event was about to start. It looked like Enzo and Cass won the match as it zoomed past on 32X speed.

Goldust and R-Truth seem to be in backstage comedy segments duing the show….

Finn Balor beat Roman Reigns clean in the main event.

Was this a punishment for Roman for failing a wellness test? Was it the start of a monster push fo Finn Balor? Maybe it was both these things or none of them.

Overall it was a good main event and a good WWE Raw – an excellent way to start the new era of Raw – the main thing I wish they didn’t do was the New Day segment which was a competely failed attempt at humor and worse form of entertainment than anything you’ll find on TV anywhere, it was that bad. Other than this, it was a strong WWE Raw to start the New Era with.

WWE Smack Down

Shane and Mick Foley opened the show with an announcement that on September the 11th, there will be a Smack Down exclusive PPV, Backlash and they needed a No.1 Contender to face Dean Ambrose for the WWE Championship.

The commentators for Smack Down are Mauro, JBL and David Otunga.
There’s no need for David Otunga here at all – much like Byron Saxton, he never offers anything of interest.

They picked the following to compete in a Six Pack Challenge match to determine the challenger at WWE Backlah: Cena, Dolph Ziggler, Bray Wyatt, Baron Corbin and AJ Styles
The first match of the night was to find the 6th entrant into the 6 pack challenge:

Sin Cara vs. Kalisto vs. Simon Gotch vs. Aiden English vs. Kane vs. Jimmy Uso vs. Jey Uso vs. Fandango vs. Tyler Breeze vs. Alberto Del Rio vs. Apollo Crews vs. Mojo Rawley vs. Zack Ryder vs. Konnor vs. Viktor in a Battle Royal.

Apollo Crews won the match and gets himself in the main event tonight.

Nattie Vs Becky Lynch…

Becky gets her revenge for the match she lost to Nattie at WWE Battleground by making Nattie Submit with the Dis Arm Her.

Shelton Benjamin is announced as returning to WWE Smack Down next week!

Miz TV with Randy Oton? I skipped this crap as soon as I knew it was about to happen…. it turned into a match between them and I just kept that fast forward going until they weren’t in the ring anymore….

Heath Slater gets in the ring and starts talking about being a free agent (he wasn’t drafted to Raw or Smack Down) and Rhyno Spears him! Welcome back Rhyno!

Bray Wyatt vs. AJ Styles vs. Dolph Ziggler vs. Baron Corbin vs. Apollo Crews Vs Cena in a Six Pack Challenge to determine the Number One Contender to the WWE Championship

Dolph Ziggler wins the match after pinning AJ Styles.
I hit fast forward any time Cena was in the ring so the match was a bit disjointed for me. I saw some things I liked but Cena kept getting involved and I kept hitting that fast forward so I don’t know how much of the match I was able to take it.

I like that Ziggler won the match and he had a stare down with Dean Ambrose as Smack Down ended.

Overall I think that fans mostly agree that Raw had the much better show last week.

It will be interesting to see if WWE keep having the better shows on WWE Raw or if they will try to balance the brands a little more.

For me, Smack Down is always at the disadvantage by having Cena, Randy Orton and The Miz all on the same show each week because that’s a lot of fast forwarding I’ll be doing. I refuse to watch those guys. I’ll never be interested or entertained by anything they do so it’s just a waste of air time as far as I’m concerned. They drag down the quality of any show they are on.
