The New Era Week 7: WWE Raw Vs WWE Smack Down

Let’s look back at WWE’s main two shows last week and see which show was the best one.

WWE Raw 5th September 2016

WWE Raw started with a good backstage promo featuring Mick Foley and Stephanie talking about HHH helping Kevin Owens win the Universal Championship the week before. Stephanie swears that she didn’t know anything about it and Mick Foley told a story about the first time he met Stephanie and she was consoling someone that had lost a loved one and had a shy smile. He said that he had to believe that Stephanie was telling the truth because to believe otherwise would mean that she’s a truly bad person and he didn’t want to believe that.

In the ring WWE Raw started with a celebration for Kevin Owens for becoming the Universal Champion last week.

Seth Rollins joined Kevin Owens along with Stephanie and Mick Foley for a good opening segment. Seth Rollins attacks Owens and Stephanie threatens to suspend him before Mick Foley says that they should instead give him the match he wants against Kevin Owens at WWE Clash Of Champions for the Universal Championship.

Charlotte Vs Bayley

Charlotte was in control for most of the match but the finishing sequence saw Bayley kicking out of a roll up and sending Charlotte into Dana, leading to her scoring a pinfall on Charlotte after capitalising on the distraction and hitting her with the Bayley-To-Belly.

Bo Dallas seems to be in line for a push as they had him facing an enhancement guy.

Seth Rollins Vs Chris Jericho

Good match between these two with Rollins scoring the win after hitting The Pedigree on Jericho.

Cesaro Vs Sheamus (Match 3 in Best Of 7 Series)

Sheamus has 2 wins going into this match and gains a 3rd win here. Sheamus scores the win after a Brogue kick. This match seemed really short. Cesaro was taped up on his shoulder from the surgery he had when he was out (which should have healed by now?) as well as his back from being backdropped into the ring post on the outside in their match the week before.

The Shining Stars Vs Enzo & Big Cass

Epico pinning Enzo with a roll up from behind and he held Enzo’s tights to secure the win.

I wasn’t very interested in this match to be honest – they had a little funny banter at each other before the match started and I think that killed any interest I would have had before the match started. I can’t stand their promos!

Sami Zayn & Kevin Owens had a great little backstage promo about each wanting to outdo the other in WWE. Sami finished by saying that when he wins the Universal Championship it will be through hard work rather than HHH handing him the belt.

Nia Jax beat another enhancement talent.

I swear she’s putting on more weight each week.

Gallows & Anderson bring out some guys who are dressed as elderly members of The New Day – it looked like another horrible WWE Comedy segment and I skipped it as fast as I could. I hate this stuff.

Darren Young Vs Jinder Mahal

I skipped this, I can’t stand these two and don’t really understand how or why they are in WWE.

These guys are awful in the ring!

Braun Strowman Vs Sin Cara

This was a slightly longer enhancement match for Braun Strowman, who won the match by Count Out when Cara wasn’t able to return to the ring in time to beat the 10 count.

The power of @BraunStrowman was too much for @SinCaraWWE to handle on #RAW! pic.twitter.com/5kAcS9GYg3

Sasha comes to the ring and teases that she’s going to retire. Dana comes to the ring to prove herself to Charlotte but quickly gets trapped in Sasha’s Bank Statement and starts tapping out. Sasha then says that the bad news is for Charlotte and it’s that she’s coming back for her Championship at the Clash Of Champions event.

Kevin Owens Vs Sami Zayn

So, their last match at the last PPV wasn’t really their last match after all? I’m not complaining as I like seeing them working with / against each other.

They have a good match. Sami’s ankle injury returns and he gets hit with Kevin’s Superkick and a big Powerbomb which enables Kevin to gain the victory over his former friend.

Roman Reigns’ music hits but before he can get his hands on Owens or Jericho, Mick Foley appears and announced that Reigns will face Owens next week and if he beats Owens he will be added to the match at Clash Of Champions, making it a Triple Threat for the Universal Championship.
Owens manages to esacpe Reigns while Jericho tries to blindside him but Reigns catches him with a big Spear to end the show.

Overall I thought this was a fair Raw, there were some things I enjoyed, like Jericho Vs Rollins, Owens Vs Zayn – the backstage promo between the two as well as the match and there were other things I didn’t care for or was indifferent to.

Smack Down starts with Daniel Bryan in the ring with the new Smack Down Women’s Championship.

Becky, Natalya, Alex Bliss, Carmella, Naomi & Nikki Bella each cut promos before it turns into a brawl. Carmella, Naomi and Nikki Bella especially really reduce the quality of the segment, as they do the quality of any match they are in and the division as a whole by being part of it.

Tensions were HIGH at the #SmackDown Women’s Championship Forum, as all SIX competitors met in the ring… #SDLive pic.twitter.com/5PSoU55UiV

The Miz Vs Apollo Crews

I skipped this, I can’t stand The Miz and try to avoid any match or segment which features him.

Becky, Nikki & Naomi Vs Natalya, Alexa and Carmella.

I was only really paying attention to parts of this this. One thing I thought was funny was how they cut to a commercial break as soon as Nikki was tagged in and when they returned from the break , Nikki had already tagged out. This was so that all the botches were not on TV. They should always take a break when Nikki is in the ring – it saved me hitting the fast forward button.

The finish of the match saw all the women brawling and Nikki got caught with Carmella’s Code Of Silence and tapped out.

American Alpha Vs The Usos

The thought of seeing these teams collide brought back memories of The Steiners Vs The Headshrinkers….. This match was very short and American Alpha scored the quick win after their Grand Amplitude just seconds into the match and advance in the tag team tournament.

After the match, The Usos finally turned heel, attacking both Jordan and Gable and especially focusing on Gable’s knee. I think the Usos are much better suited as heels and I look forward to some longer match between these two teams in the future with that Heel / Face dynamic they will now have. I believe this will lead to some really good tag team matches.

Fandango is in the ring gyrating and talking about feeling fire in his belly as he dances with some old lady named Betty. He asked her to leave the ring and Kane comes to the ring and Chokeslams him….. I like Kane but there was no need for the bad segment leading to his appearance here. It wasn’t funny, it wasn’t cool, it was just annoying.

Heath Slater & Rhyno Vs Hype Bros

Rhyno won the match for his team by hitting the Gore on Zack Ryder and they advance to the next round in the tag team Championship tournament.

I like Rhyno but I think him teaming with Heath Slater is pretty bad, they have any reason to be a team and it just feels awkward to me when I see them teaming.

AJ Styles / Dean Ambrose Face-To-Face

Deam Ambrose gives Styles a participation trophy and tells him that’s the only thing he’s taking from him – AJ Styles ends up hitting Dean with a low blow and smashing up the trophy, leading to their match at Backlash on Sunday.

Overall this was an average Smack Down although it succeed in advancing all the angles and the feuds towards Backlash so it served it’s main purpose.

I don’t like Rhyno and Heath Slater being in the finals for the tag titles over a better team. If it ended up being The Vaudevillians Vs American Alpha in the final for example it would have been a lot better – the final match in the tournament would have been a good match and the Championships would mean more if won in a really good tag team match….

Also, Nikki and Naomi shouldn’t be competing for the Women’s Championship – I don’t think they are qualified stand at ringside as a valet to be honest.

They ended the event with a promo segment which wasn’t ideal.

This week I feel that Raw had the stronger show with a couple of good matches and promos.
