The New Era Week One: WWE Raw Vs WWE Smack Down

Let’s take a look back at WWE’s Raw and Smack Down last week for week 9 of WWE Raw Vs WWE Smack Down…..

WWE Raw 19th September 2016

Raw started with a segment featuring Roman Reigns, Kevin Owens and Rusev – Mick Foley makes a Non-Title steel cage match between Kevin Owens and Roman Reigns as the main event for Raw.

Seth Rollins Vs Rusev

This match ends in a Double Count Out. Like most Rusev matches, I just can’t pay attention to it without getting bored and thinking about something else.

There may have been a double count out, but @WWERollins just made sure @RusevBUL STAYED down for the count! #RAW pic.twitter.com/Qkco4ExYp4

Braun Strowman Vs Sin Cara

This was another squash match for Braun Strowman and thankfully didn’t last long. Strowman is very limited and a longer match wouldn’t be good for him.

Is @SinCaraWWE regretting requesting another match against @BraunStrowman right about now? #RAW pic.twitter.com/qKqFaWgQSi

Cesaro Vs Sheamus (Match 6 in the Best Of 7 Series)

Cesaro wins the match with his Neutralizer finishing move – I think Cesaro has really been bringing out the best in Sheamus who I consider to be a boring performer for the most part. Cesaro seems to work so hard and do so much that it pushes Sheamus to work harder and do more. They have been having some good matches against each other.

Match 7 will take place at Raw’s Exclusive PPV, Clash Of Champions on Sunday.

Chris Jericho tells fans that Foley has been doing a bad job as the Raw GM before Enzo and Cass interrupt him. The Shining Stars and New Day appear in the segment too – I hit fast forward when Enzo and Cass were going into their little routine and kept going until the match was about to t start…..

Primo was pinned by Enzo at the end of this pointless 10 man tag match.

#1 Contender For WWE Cruiserweight Championship: Rich Swann vs. Gran Metalik vs. Cedric Alexander vs. Brian Kendrick

This was a great match and by far the best thing on Raw – Brian Kendrick won the match and will face TJ Perkins for the Cruiserweight Championship at Clash Of Champions.

Steel Cage, Non-Title Match: Kevin Owens vs. Roman Reigns

They had a good cage match with Roman gaining the victory by climbing up and over the cage and reaching the ground before Kevin could make it out of the door.

Rusev comes to the ring and joins Kevin Owens in attacking Roman. Seth Rollins climbs the cage and stops the attack on Roman by hitting a Crossbody on Kevin and Rusev before Raw ends.

I thought this Raw had some good and some bad. I especially liked the Cruiserweight match and the main event. The women’s match and Sheamus Vs Cesaro were fine too – I like Mick Foley working with Stephanie and Mick has been on top form – his backstage promo with Jericho was cool and he is able to be funny but flip the switch at the right time and get dead serious too. I’ve been enjoying his work.

I think that Raw would benefit from only being 2 hours instead of 3 hours because a lot of the “filler” really lets the show down.

WWE Smack Down 20th September 2016

Becky / Alexa Contract Signing

Smack Down Women’s Champion Becky comes to the ring for her contract signing with Alexa Bliss. Both women cut good promos, with Becky saying that she wasn’t born to be a Champion but she fought hard to overcome the odds and Alexa saying that she was born to be a Champion.

Alexa signs the contract and throws it into Becky’s face and upturning the table on top of her to end the segment – Good stuff here, I thought this was a strong segment to start Smack Down.

The Usos Vs American Alpha

I thought this was a really good match with The Usos targetting Gable’s injured knee. At one point Jordan didn’t tag out when he needed to as he could see that Gable’s leg was injured – Gable was doing a great job at selling the injury.

The Usos win the match after a Frog Splash on Jordan.

I look forward to seeing future matches between these two great teams!

Baron Corbin Vs Apollo Crews

I felt this match could have been a little longer but Corbin won the match with an End Of Days and stared Swagger in the face who had been sitting at ringside doing commentary for the match. It’s a shame that Apollo was such an afterthought here.

Dolph Ziggler Vs The Miz

I don’t watch Miz matches so I skipped this match completely.

Randy Orton Vs Erick Rowan

Orton matches bore me – I allowed the match to continue but I just didn’t pay much attention to the TV – Orton won with an RKO……

Nikki Bella & Naomi Vs Carmella & Natalya

I don’t watch matches with Nikki Bella or Naomi if I can avoid them and I could easily avoid this so I skipped it…..

Dean Ambrose Vs John Cena

I don’t watch John Cena matches so I stopped Smack Down before either of them came to the ring. I’ve read that Dean defeated Cena clean. That’s good but I still wouldn’t ever watch a Cena match. It’s a shame he and his girlfriend returned at all.

WWE Raw was by far the better show this week.

I feel that with John Cena, The Miz and Nikki Bella it’s unfair for Smack Down because their matches and segments are never going to be good, they will always be bad workers and I’m never going to waste my time watching them. Add Orton to that too – while not quite a bad,  I more often than not find his promos and matches to be incredibly boring and predictable and not worth watching.  Having them all on Smack Down means that the quality of the show will always be extremely low overall.

I liked The Usos / American Alpha match as well as the opening contract signing featuring Becky and Alexa.

This week’s winner: WWE Raw
