WWE Backlash 2016

Here’s a look back at the WWE Backlash PPV which took place last week.

This is first brand exclusive pay-per-view of SmackDown since the current brand split

WWE Backlash 2016 Match Card:

– Intercontinental Champion Match between The Miz vs. Dolph Ziggler
– Randy Orton vs Bray Wyatt
– SmackDown Women’s Championship Six-Pack Challenge
– The Usos/Hype Bros. vs. Heath Slater & Rhyno — SmackDown Tag Team Championship Tournament Final
– WWE World Champion Match between Dean Ambrose vs. AJ Styles
– Just Announced: Baron Corbin vs. Apollo Crews

WWE BackLash is live from Richmond, Virginia.

With Orton suffering a concussion at the hands of Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam it was reported before the event that Orton would not be ready for his match with Bray Wyatt on the night.

Baron Corbin Vs Apollo Crews

This was a good little match which saw Baron win by pinfall.

Backlash officially starts with Shane McMahon in the ring with GM Daniel Bryan and they take up some time to announce the already announced Women’s Six Pack Challenge match….

WWE SmackDown Women’s Championship Six Pack Challenge: Becky, Alexis, Nattie, Carmella, Naomi, Nikki

Becky and Carmella were the last two women left in the ring. Carmella hits the Superkick before Becky locks Carmella in her submission move, Disarmer, for the win.

Becky Lynch becomes first ever SmackDown Women’s Champion

I feel this is very well deserved for Becky, the best female on the Smack Down roster and the crowd seemed to feel that way too. As far as the quality of the match, it was fair considering that Nikki and Naomi were in the ring.

It was excellent to see Becky Lynch becoming the new Women’s Champion but the match was the kind of standard match you see (or don’t see) on TV each week. It’s not really possible to have anything better than that with Nikki Bella involved who is very basic at her very best – she isn’t capable of having a PPV quality match and drags down the quality of any match she’s in to a basic level.

Dolph Ziggler Vs The Miz

This is a real step down again for Ziggler – fighting Dean Ambrose for the WWE Championshio at SummerSlam and now in a match with Miz here…. I don’t watch Miz matches so I skipped the match I think the Miz won with help from Maryse.

Earlier backstage they showed Randy Orton being attacked by Bray Wyatt to excuse him from his match with Bray due to his concussion.

Bray Wyatt Vs Kane

Kane wins the match with a Chokeslam after Randy Orton hit an RKO on Bray Wyatt

SmackDown Tag Team Championship: Heath Slater and Rhyno vs. The Usos

The Usos defeated Hype Bros to reach the final with Rhyno and Slater….
This match wasn’t very good and I thought the wrong team won – Heath Slater and Rhyno don’t make a good team mainly due to the fact that Heath Slater isn’t very good and they don’t work like a team. This was the company’s chance to start the new belts on a good track but Heath and Rhyno are the first guys to win them? I think that was a terrible idea. The Usos, American Alpha or The Vaudevillians would have been good choices to be crowned as the first Champions. If Tommy Dreamer returned to team with Rhyno, that would have been a great team to start the Championship with…. but Heath Slater and Rhyno? Any team with Heath Slater is automatically a chapter in the next WrestleCrap book. I’ll never really be able to take the new belts seriously, knowing where they started.

WWE World Championship: Dean Ambrose vs. AJ Styles

This was easily the best match at Backlash 2016 – Dean and AJ worked really well together and put together a good match.

The finish saw Styles low blow Ambrose behind the referee’s back and followed it with the Styles Clash and pinned Ambrose to become the new WWE World Champion.

This is something that many of us thought we would never see a few years ago and I think it’s great to see AJ Styles as the WWE Champion. It’s very well deserved!

Overall, the PPV was a one match show, with the main event worth going out of your way to watch everything else was a little average and left me feeling indifferent.
