The New Era Week One: WWE Raw Vs WWE Smack Down

Before WWE Raw tonight, let’s take a look back at last week’s Raw and Smack Down and see which brand is doing the best.

WWE Raw 12th September 2016

Mick Foley started the show by congratulating new Smack Down Women’s Champion Becky Lynch but said that he believe the best women were on Raw and he introduced Raw Women’s Champion Charlotte to the ring who was accompanied by Dana Brooke.

Charlotte made Dana apologise to her for playing a part in her losing to Bayley last week and Dana quickly apologises.

Sasha came to the ring said that she would become Champion at Clash Of The Champions – Raw’s first exclusive PPV since the current roster split. Bayley came to the ring and said that she deserves a Championship match after beating the Charlotte last week. Charlotte told Dana to shut her mouth after she suggested that Bayley and Sasha should fight over who gets the Title shot and Dana slapped Charlotte hard.

Mick Foley announced a Triple Threat Match next to determine who would be the No.1 contender at Clash Of Champions.

Dana Brooke vs Sasha Banks vs Bayley (winner faces Charlotte at Clash Of Champions for the Women’s title)

Bayley hit the Belly to Bayley to Dana and  went for the pin but Sasha bridged Bayley for her own pinfall, securing the win and the Championship match at Clash Of Champions.

Bo Dallas Vs Brandon Scott

This was just a quick enhancement match for Bo Dallas who won the match easily within a couple of minutes. Bo has been allowed to be more aggressive in recent weeks.

Chris Jericho’s Highlight Reel with Sami Zayn

This was a really good promo segment, with Sami telling Jericho that he is wrong to consider that leading to Chris Jericho attacking Zayn with the Codebreaker to start their feud which I’m really looking forward to. This is going to lead to some great matches and and promos for however long it lasts and I hope it lasts a good while.

Sheamus vs Cesaro (Match 5 in the Best Of Seven Series)

We were told that Cesaro picked up his first win in the series at an untelevised event. I thought this was crazy as it’s important to have that first win on TV after losing 3 straight matches, right?

Cesaro picked up his second win in the series making it 3-2 in the Best Of 7 Series.
The match was okay but felt quite rushed.

Nia Jax vs Alicia Fox

Nia beat up Alicia’s friend last week and got into her face backstage leading to this match but Alicia was just a jobber here – getting beat up at ringside and Speared through the barricade and left laying.

Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods vs The Club

This was a good little TV match with The Club taking the win after hitting their Magic Killer Finisher. They will face New Day at Clash Of The Champions for the Tag Team Championship.

Jack Swagger Vs Jinder Mahal.

Jinder is awful in the ring but he went over here. It turns out that Swagger has been moved to Smack Down and has had his character revamped somewhat but to start this process with a loss to Jinder is just not a good way to start anything positive for him.

Jinder won the match with a Neckbreaker.

After the match, Swagger was asked about his Raw contract expiring soon and he didn’t say anything before walking away.

Epico Vs Enzo Amore

This was a short match. Epico managed to get the pinfall with the help of Primo holding Enzo’s leg down, preventing a kick-out.

Kevin Owens and Seth Rollins almost came to blows backstage but Mick Foley intervened and told Seth that there would be major consequences if he interferes in Raw’s main event…..

Kevin Owens Vs Roman Reigns

I thought they had a really good main event match and worked well together – at one point Seth Rollins came to ringside and attacked Kevin Owens but Mick Foley sent Seth to the back and restarted the match.

As Reigns was about to go for the spear, Rusev returned to distract Reigns and that was enough for Owens to hit the pop-up powerbomb for the 3-count and the win.

This was easily the best match on Raw and along with the Jericho / Zayn Highlight Reel, these were the main things worth watching on an otherwise average Raw.

After the match, Rusev hit Reigns with a superkick.

WWE Smack Down 13th September 2016

Unfortunately John Cena has returned so I skipped the first segment which featured him and Ambrose and Styles in the ring with Shane McMahon. I just can’t bring myself to watch a segment featuring the irritating John Cena.

The Usos Vs Hype Bros

This was a rematch from WWE Backlash with The Usos scoring the quick win over Ryder and Rowley.

Dolph Ziggler / The Miz Segment

Much like John Cena – although not quite as bad, The Miz is so annoying that I just auto skip any segment or match he’s involved with….
Apollo Crews vs. Baron Corbin

This was due to be another rematch from Backlash but Baron jumped Apollo before the match could start, leaving him injured and forcing the referee to cancel the match. Jack Swagger came to the ring to chase Baron away and cut a more lively that usual promo. Swagger is now on Smack Down.

Nikki Bella vs Naomi vs Natalya vs Alexa Bliss vs Carmella (#1 contender match for SmackDown Women’s Championship)

I completely skipped this match but I’ve read that Alexa won the match which I think is great and she should have good matches with Becky.

Heath Slater and Rhyno vs. The Ascension for SmackDown Tag-Team Championship

This was just a very short enhancement match for Slater and Rhyno who won within a few minutes.

Randy Orton promo on Bray Wyatt

I skip Orton promos, that guy is so boring.

AJ Styles and The Miz vs. John Cena and Dean Ambrose

John Cena and The Miz in the same match!??? No Way, this was instantly skipped.

Thanks to John Cena and The Miz and nothing really of any worth happening on the show, WWE Raw was definitely the better show this week.

I've been watching pro wrestling since 1989 and quickly caught on to UFC when it first started - thinking it would be a different type of pro wrestling similar to Japan's UWFI! I also make industrial metal / alternative music - I play drums, guitars, bass and keyboards and produce.
